The Welsh Government has supported several recommendations from a Welsh Parliament committee, including the proposal to offer compensation to tenants in specific eviction scenarios, such as when a landlord needs to sell their property or move back in.
This proposal has drawn criticism from the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA). Chief Executive Ben Beadle described it as unreasonable, arguing that requiring landlords to pay compensation for reclaiming their property reveals a misunderstanding of landlords’ motivations. Beadle emphasized that such policies could discourage landlords from investing in the private rental sector, thereby reducing the availability of quality rental housing.
On a positive note, the NRLA expressed approval for other recommendations endorsed by the Welsh Government, including initiatives aimed at improving property standards and formulating a strategy for the private rental sector.
